At St. Alphonsus Mary de Liguori Parish Church, also known as Magallanes
Church, in Magallanes Village, Makati, one finds the Garden of the Way
of the Cross, designed by National
Artist for Architecture Ildefonso P. Santos during the tenure of
Monsignor Ernesto Cruz. Dedicated on Palm Sunday, March 24, 2002, the
garden contains 14 Stations of the Cross, each the work of a leading
sculptor such as Napoleon Abueva, Ramon Orlina, the Imao and Arcilla
brothers, or Solomon Saprid.
The goal of this present retrofit project is to protect the sculpture.
Glass canopies will shield them from rain and falling branches. A running stream, one meter wide, will separate the sculpture from a reaching hand, without blocking the view. A wall of black java will help secure the garden and minimize the noise coming from the highway, underscoring the goal of encouraging prayer and contemplation in this spiritual exercise originated by St. Alphonsus. New iron gates suggest welcoming hands, expressing the welcome that the parish extends to those who visit the garden as well as suggesting the acceptance and welcome with which Christ responds to His fate.
Landscape Architect Cecile Herras Tence assisted IP Santos with the project in 2002 and will restore the planting back to its original tropical lushness.
